Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has said institutions should work in cooperation with the Government to ensure the effective implementation of development initiatives under the Administration.

The remarks were made during the inauguration of the People’s National Congress (PNC) campaign office for the South Galolhu constituency in Malé City on 22 February. The event was attended by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed, party officials, and candidates contesting for the Malé City Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) seats in the constituency.

Speaking at the event, Minister Rafiu said voters elect a President to carry out a national agenda and that effective governance requires cooperation from institutions responsible for implementing public policy. He said challenges arise when elected bodies do not work in alignment with development objectives, adding that such situations can affect the delivery of services to the public.

The Minister said local councils play a key role in public service delivery and noted that development initiatives can face difficulties when coordination between the central Government and councils is limited. He said progress in areas such as development and public services requires constructive engagement between different levels of government.

Minister Rafiu also said the party’s candidates have demonstrated the ability to work with Government institutions and urged voters to consider candidates who can contribute to the effective use and management of resources provided by the Government. He added that cooperation between councils and the central Government is important to ensure that public assets and facilities are maintained and used for the benefit of communities.

The ruling PNC has been conducting campaign activities across the country ahead of the upcoming Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections scheduled for 4 April 2026.
