Baarah MP and Deputy Leader of the People's National Congress (PNC), Ibrahim Shujau, has stated that Malé City's Mayor Adam Azim has not extended cooperation in initiatives undertaken by the Government to address key challenges facing the capital.
Shujau made the remarks while speaking to MMTV during a door-to-door campaign conducted by the PNC in West Henveiru.
He said Malé, as a densely populated city, continues to face numerous long-standing issues, and noted that the Government has launched major initiatives to resolve these concerns and make the city more liveable and secure for residents. He added that the Government has sought the active participation and support of the Malé City Council in implementing these efforts.
Highlighting the redevelopment of the Local Market area, one of the busiest commercial zones in Malé, Shujau said the Government completed the project within 65 days, easing congestion and improving conditions in the area. However, he alleged that the Mayor did not provide cooperation in carrying out the work.
“If there had been a council and a Mayor working in support of these efforts, the speed of implementation would have doubled,” Shujau said.
He contrasted the current situation with the period when President Dr Mohamed Muizzu served as Mayor of Malé, stating that during that time cooperation was extended to Government-led projects, including the development of Ameenee Magu.
Shujau further stated that residents of Malé wish to see the city transformed into a safe and orderly urban centre. He said the upcoming Local Council Election offers an opportunity for voters to elect representatives who would work closely with the Government to modernise roads, address issues related to expatriate populations, and reduce congestion in the capital.
He expressed confidence that voters would elect the PNC’s mayoral candidate, Major General (Retired) Moosa Ali Jaleel, as well as Ashiyath Alika Adhnan, who is contesting for President of the Women’s Development Committee, along with other party candidates seeking seats in the council and committee.
