The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has assured that fish products sold by the company will remain available to the public throughout Ramadan, despite a recent decline in fish catch levels.

Speaking to State media, the company said fish catch volumes dropped at the start of Ramadan, while demand for fish products increased significantly in line with seasonal consumption patterns during the holy month. MIFCO noted that advance preparations had been made to manage the anticipated surge in demand and to prevent supply disruptions.

According to statistics released by the company, fishermen supplied an average of 242 tonnes of fish per day in December. The figure decreased to 93 tonnes per day last month and has further fallen to an average of 58 tonnes per day so far this month.

Despite the reduction in daily fish purchases, MIFCO stated that its priority is to ensure uninterrupted access to fish products for the public during Ramadan. The company confirmed that its products will continue to be available at MIFCO retail outlets.

MIFCO added that it is working closely with fishermen and other stakeholders in the fisheries sector to monitor catch levels and respond to changes, taking necessary measures to maintain stable supply during the fasting month.
