The Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) has initiated an urgent investigation into occupational safety and health measures at the Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) following a serious workplace incident involving an employee at the corporation’s Malé City site.

In a post shared on social media on Tuesday evening, HRCM said the decision was taken after recurring concerns related to workplace safety at WAMCO. The Commission said the matter was discussed at a meeting held the previous night, after which it was decided to proceed with an expedited inquiry into safety protocols in place to prevent workplace injuries and hazards.

Maldives Police Service confirmed that a man was seriously injured in an incident that occurred at the WAMCO site in Malé City. Police said the injured individual is currently receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) and is on ventilator support. The Police said an investigation into the incident is underway.
