Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has dispatched 56 ambulances to islands across the country as part of a national initiative to establish a sustainable ambulance service in all inhabited islands.

The distribution of ambulances to the islands began on 17 January 2026 and was completed on 14 February.

The project was awarded to MPL in 2025 under a contractor finance arrangement, with a total cost of MVR 65.3 million. Under the first phase, 56 ambulances were brought to the Maldives and handed over for service.

Of the 56 ambulances, one has been handed over to the Maldives Correctional Service, while the remaining vehicles have been delivered to islands in both the northern and southern regions of the country.

In addition to delivering the ambulances, MPL’s mechanical team has provided technical information and guidance to hospital and health centre staff on operating and maintaining the vehicles. The company also stated that assistance is being provided to identify and address issues faced by some ambulances currently in use.

Beyond the 56 ambulances already delivered, the Ministry of Health has previously announced plans to procure additional ambulances for 31 more islands within this year. The ministry also plans to introduce 10 paramedic ambulances to strengthen emergency medical services in the Greater Malé area and other urban centres.

The initiative to provide ambulances to all inhabited islands was launched following concerns highlighted during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visits to atolls, where discussions were held with local councils and institutions regarding challenges faced by island communities.
