The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has forecast below-average rainfall across the country during the upcoming month of March.

The Maldives is currently in the Northeast monsoon season, which typically runs from January until the end of March. While some rainfall is usually recorded in various parts of the country during this period, shifting seasonal patterns can influence the overall distribution and intensity of rain.

MET stated that, based on historical comparisons, rainfall totals this March are expected to be lower than the long-term average nationwide. In the northern atolls, rainfall is likely to be at or below normal levels. Central and southern atolls are also forecast to receive less rain than is typical for the month.

In addition to reduced rainfall, temperatures are projected to rise slightly above seasonal norms across the country. Both daytime highs and nighttime lows in March are expected to be marginally higher than average.

Past climate records indicate that average March rainfall differs by region. The Malé area records an average of 48.6 millimetres of rain during the month, while the northernmost atolls receive around 32.7 millimetres. In contrast, Addu Atoll in the south records a considerably higher March average of 120.5 millimetres. This year, rainfall in all regions is forecast to remain below these historical averages.

April is traditionally the hottest month of the year in the Maldives.
