Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has clarified that the Government’s current plan for Baa Dharavandhoo Airport is centred on upgrading airport facilities and enhancing terminal infrastructure.
His remarks follow social media posts alleging that a proposed runway extension and land reclamation would harm Hanifaru Bay and that the Government was not prioritising the airport’s development.
Minister Ameen stated that the information circulating regarding runway extension reclamation at Dharavandhoo Airport is inaccurate. He emphasised that the present focus is on improving passenger services and strengthening operational efficiency through terminal upgrades.
Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib also addressed the issue in a separate statement, providing further clarification on discussions surrounding possible land reclamation.
He noted that preliminary studies on a potential reclamation plan were conducted last year. However, no decision has been taken to proceed with any such project. He added that if a reclamation initiative was considered, it would have been formally communicated with the Dharavandhoo Council.
Dharavandhoo Airport has seen limited upgrades over the past 12 years, a matter that has been a source of concern for residents. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has previously assured that the airport would be developed, highlighting the Administration’s commitment to strengthening regional infrastructure.
