Parliament's Gavaaidhu Committee has decided to discuss the revision of child support allowances with the Ministry of Social and Family Development, the Family Court, the department of judicial administration, and a relevant NGO.
The decision follows a proposal raised by member of Parliament for Galolhu Uthuru Constituency, Mohamed Ibrahim, highlighting concerns over the current financial provisions for child support.
Regulations currently stipulate MVR 2,000 per month for a single child and a minimum of MVR 1,000 for each additional child. The allowances also cover two school uniforms, one pair of shoes, educational materials, and the child’s medical expenses at Government rates.
However, concerns were raised that the current provisions are insufficient to meet rising costs of living. Specific issues cited include the inability to cover school fees, tuition, food, and other essential needs within the prescribed amount. It was noted that delays in court proceedings further compound financial challenges for single mothers and broken families.
