The Government has announced plans to establish fully equipped sports fishing ports across the country, aiming to attract more tourists and strengthen the economy.
The initiative was highlighted by the Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, during the closing ceremony of the “Mas Race” marking the 44th Fishermen’s Day.
Since taking office, the current Administration has prioritised resolving challenges in the fisheries sector, including addressing unpaid subsidies and reducing fuel prices for fishermen. The minister highlighted these efforts as part of the Government’s broader strategy to revitalise the industry.
As part of a presidential pledge, five locations have been identified for the development of specialised sports fishing harbours. These ports will feature administrative offices, restaurants, cafes, fishing supply outlets, and barbecue areas.
The rise in popularity of sports fishing, particularly among the youth, underscores its potential as a key contributor to the economy. The Government envisions these ports not only enhancing the appeal of the Maldives as a fishing destination but also diversifying tourism offerings beyond its beaches.
