The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development has announced plans to host an international conference titled Global Government Summit on Social Innovation.
The conference is scheduled to take place from 19 May to 22 May this year, with preparations already underway.
Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed shared the details during a press briefing held at the President’s Office. He said labour ministers and officials from international organisations representing more than 100 countries are expected to participate in the conference.
Minister Dr Haidar said the Government is working to strengthen the labour market over the next five years under a national strategy aimed at reducing unemployment. The initiative seeks to ensure that jobseekers are able to access employment opportunities that align with their education, experience and skills.
As part of these efforts, the Ministry is strengthening work to increase the number of jobseekers registered under the National Career Services through the Job Portal.
The Minister also revealed plans to introduce a National Labour Award to recognise the contributions of workers and employers at the national level. Efforts are underway to hold the award ceremony in early July this year.
In addition, the Social Dialogue Conference, which was first held last year with the participation of workers, employers and the Government, is also scheduled to take place again this year. The conference is planned for early September.
The Ministry is also preparing to organise Vara Expo, described as the largest national event focused on employment, skills and entrepreneurship in the Maldives. The expo is expected to be held later in September.
