Construction work on a 30-bed hospital planned for development in Raa Meedhoo has officially commenced.

The project was formally launched on Monday during a ceremony held in Meedhoo, where Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim broke ground to begin construction. Managing Director of Road Development Corporation (RDC) Ibrahim Nazeem and Member of Parliament for the Maduvvari constituency Ahmed Zahir also attended the ceremony.

Healthcare services in Meedhoo are currently provided through a health centre. The decision to establish a hospital on the island fulfils a pledge made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to the residents of the island. The construction project was awarded to RDC in May 2025.

The planned 30-bed hospital will include the full range of services typically provided by hospitals of its category. Facilities at the hospital will include patient wards, an operation theatre, an emergency room and several other essential medical services.

The Government is working to strengthen the standard of healthcare services available within the atolls, while reducing the need for residents to travel to Malé area to seek medical treatment. As part of these efforts, several hospitals are being upgraded to tertiary level services, existing hospitals are being expanded, and new hospitals and healthcare facilities are being developed across the country.
