Minister of Social and Family Development Dr Aishath Shiham has announced that the Government is on track to provide employment opportunities for an additional 500 persons with disabilities by the end of this year.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, the Minister said a nationwide functional assessment has been completed to evaluate individual capabilities and identify suitable employment pathways.

Minister Dr Shiham noted that more than 350 persons with disabilities have already secured employment under the initiative, reflecting the Government’s commitment to improving workplace inclusivity.

She emphasised that building an inclusive society remains a key priority, with efforts focused on addressing the challenges and barriers faced by persons with disabilities in accessing and sustaining employment.

Highlighting the transition from education to employment, the Minister said the assessments were designed to match individuals with job roles suited to their abilities. She added that the Civil Service Commission has introduced policy changes to ease access to opportunities within the public sector, while similar approaches are being encouraged in the private sector.

The Government has also introduced job readiness programmes to equip participants with essential workplace skills. Two batches, comprising 22 participants, have completed training so far, with a third batch currently underway.

In addition, plans are in place to establish an empowerment hub that will provide training and support programmes, including initiatives led by NGOs. The Ministry is also working with the Maldives Polytechnic to deliver specialised training and skill development opportunities aimed at supporting long-term employment for persons with disabilities.
