A 5.3 magnitude earthquake was recorded on Saturday at a distance of approximately 2,553 kilometres from Addu City, authorities have confirmed.
Maldives Meteorological Service stated the earthquake occurred at around 9:55 a.m. and was detected in the mid-Indian Ocean region. The agency stated that the tremor poses no direct impact or threat to the Maldives.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also recorded the seismic event, noting a slightly higher magnitude of 5.5. The quake was registered at approximately 10:00 a.m. in the mid-Indian Ocean region.
While the region experienced this moderate earthquake today, a stronger 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia on 2 April. That event did not result in any impact on the Maldives. However, tsunami advisories were issued for parts of Asia following the quake.
No tsunami waves or significant damage were reported in any country as a result of the April 2 earthquake, authorities confirmed.
