Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that efforts are underway to bring 80 containers of essential goods currently pending at Sri Lankan ports, with priority being given to maintaining supply in the domestic market.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, the minister said a significant volume of goods has yet to be shipped from Sri Lanka, noting that around 4,200 containers remain pending.

He said discussions are ongoing with relevant Sri Lankan authorities, while the Government is working closely with importers to address concerns and expedite the arrival of essential items.

The minister emphasised that there is no current shortage of basic commodities in the Maldivian market, adding that measures are being taken as a precaution to ensure continued availability.

He further noted that 164 essential items are being monitored daily, with coordination maintained with importers to ensure stable supply and prevent disruptions.
