A total of 375 people quit tobacco use last year, statistics released by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) have shown.

The figures were shared during a press briefing held at the President’s Office, where the HPA presented updates on its tobacco cessation efforts and control measures.

The data shows that cessation services were provided to 2,003 individuals over the past year, while 770 people accessed support through the Quit Line service. In addition, 494 healthcare workers completed specialised training in tobacco cessation.

The Government has been implementing a range of measures to strengthen tobacco control in the Maldives.

Following amendments to tobacco control laws, the generational ban came into effect on 1 November 2025. Under this measure, individuals born on or after 1 January 2007 are permanently prohibited from purchasing tobacco products.

The Government has also taken further steps to reduce tobacco use, including increasing duties on cigarettes and banning the use of vape products in the country.
