The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has reported significant weather changes as the country transitions from the Hulhangu (southwest) monsoon to the Iruvai (northeast) monsoon. This seasonal shift is expected to bring intensified winds, thunderstorms, and turbulent seas across various regions of the Maldives in the coming days.

A storm that formed over the Bay of Bengal on December 16, 2024 has influenced the weather patterns across the Indian Ocean. Another storm developing near Tamil Nadu in southern India is forecast to impact the region, with combined effects expected to bring stronger winds to the Maldives from December 18 and persisting for at least five days.

Winds across the southern and central atolls are expected to reach speeds between 17 and 27 miles per hour, while winds in the northern atolls will range from 13 to 23 miles per hour. Ocean conditions in the northern regions are predicted to be turbulent, with even more severe disturbances expected in the southern and central atolls.

In addition to surface winds, the clouds may see wind speeds intensify to between 40 and 55 miles per hour.

Lightning activity is also likely in the southern and central regions, which are also at risk of turbulent weather. These conditions are expected to create challenging and potentially hazardous situations for ocean travel.

The Maldives Meteorological Service has urged residents, especially those travelling at sea, to stay updated with weather advisories and make informed decisions to ensure their safety. The service will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
