The removal of tariffs on Maldivian fish exports to the United Kingdom from 20 May 2026 followed continuous discussions and consultations with British officials, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said.

Speaking on the “Nation Chat” programme aired Friday night, President Dr Muizzu said concerns over the 20 per cent tariff imposed on fish exports had been repeatedly raised during meetings with UK leaders and representatives.

The President said the Maldives had attached significant importance to resolving the issue, noting that Maldivian fish products hold an important place in the UK market.

President Dr Muizzu also stated that although the tariff concession applies to several countries, the Maldives is expected to benefit significantly.

“The country that will receive the biggest relief is the Maldives. The highest tariff was imposed on the Maldives as well,” President Dr Muizzu said.

The Maldives exports fish products worth close to GBP 18 million to the United Kingdom each year. The removal of the tariff is expected to ease export costs and provide support to the fisheries sector and local fishermen.
