The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) and the Maldives Institute of Technology (MIT) have launched the "Vilunveri Kanbalun" programme aimed at empowering women through technical skills training and practical learning opportunities.
HDC stated that the programme is designed to increase women's self-confidence and encourage greater participation in technical fields by equipping participants with practical skills that can be applied in their daily lives. The initiative builds on the success of a pilot programme conducted in 2023, with this year's edition expanded to accommodate more participants and a broader range of training areas.
A total of 264 women applied to participate in the programme, with HDC confirming that all applicants have been accepted. The training programme, which began on June 5, is being conducted in multiple batches to facilitate participation.
This year's programme includes training on the maintenance and repair of household electrical appliances as well as basic motorcycle troubleshooting and repair. Participants who successfully complete the training will receive certificates.
HDC said the programme is part of efforts to equip women with practical technical knowledge while promoting self-reliance and confidence. The corporation added that similar skills development programmes targeting youth and persons with disabilities are also planned for the future.
