Residents of Haa DHaalu Hirimaradhoo who wish to relocate to Haa Alifu Hoarafushi can now register their interest, following an announcement by the Hoarafushi Island Council.

The council has requested interested residents to register within 30 days from 24 June at the former Hirimaradhoo Council office, now operating as the Hanimaadhoo ward office. Those wishing to relocate may also register by emailing the council or contacting the council office on 4002064.

Speaking to State media, Hoarafushi Council President Mohamed Asfaam said the decision to allocate plots to Hirimaradhoo residents wishing to relocate had been made by the previous council. He noted that Hoarafushi has previously welcomed residents from smaller island communities, with people from two other islands in Haa Dhaalu Atoll having already relocated to the island. He added that the council would determine how many Hirimaradhoo residents wish to relocate before working with the Government to facilitate the process.

The Government decided to relocate Hirimaradhoo residents to Hanimaadhoo following requests from the island's residents, citing the challenges of providing essential services and undertaking development projects for a small population. Although more than 500 people are registered on the island, around 200 currently reside there. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu declared Hirimaradhoo an uninhabited island after transferring its administrative status to Hanimaadhoo Council. While the relocation process is underway, the Government has said basic services will continue to be provided for as long as people remain on the island.
