Passengers and staff at Velana International Airport (VIA) will be able to watch FIFA World Cup matches from four dedicated viewing areas set up by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) throughout the tournament.
MACL's Head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations, Hassan Ghassan, told MMTV that two viewing areas have been designated for passengers and another two for employees. The viewing venues are located at Terminal 1, Terminal 2, the Airport Recreation Centre Hall and the Transport Ground on the eastern side of the airport, with the largest screen installed at Terminal 1. The venues have also been decorated with the flags of the participating teams to create a World Cup atmosphere.
In addition to the live match screenings, MACL has planned several activities for employees throughout the tournament. Staff will be encouraged to wear the jerseys of the teams they support every Thursday, while a match score prediction competition will also be held, with prizes awarded to the top three participants. Ghassan said the initiative is aimed at ensuring both passengers and employees can enjoy the World Cup in a lively and welcoming environment.
VIA handles more than 6,000 tourist arrivals each day, in addition to thousands of departing passengers. This year's FIFA World Cup, hosted across three countries, features 48 teams and is currently in the final round of group-stage matches as nations compete for places in the knockout stage.
