The Government is developing a programme to help people who complete drug rehabilitation successfully reintegrate into society, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan has said.
Speaking at a ceremony to present certificates to participants who completed the Drug Court's rehabilitation programme, the Minister said the initiative forms part of the Government's efforts to build a drug-free generation. He said the programme is intended to support individuals after rehabilitation, enabling them to rebuild their lives with dignity and become active members of society.
The Minister said the Government would continue supporting people after they complete rehabilitation until they are able to establish stable and independent lives. He added that the reintegration programme will be implemented once the necessary framework has been put in place.
Speaking about the Government's rehabilitation initiatives, Minister Ihusaan said construction of the rehabilitation centre in Noonu Velidhoo is expected to be completed by December this year. In addition, the Minister confirmed that rehabilitation centres being developed in Kaafu Kaashidhoo and Laamu Gan are expected to be completed by December next year.
The Minister also called for greater public support for people recovering from drug addiction, saying stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to successful reintegration. He urged the public to give those who have completed rehabilitation the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
He added that employers, businesses and the wider community all have a responsibility to support former drug users by providing opportunities for them to reintegrate into society.
More than 300 participants have successfully completed the Drug Court's rehabilitation programme since it was introduced.
