An Outreach Centre of the National Centre for the Holy Quran has opened in Fuvahmulah City, expanding facilities for Quranic education and religious activities in the island.

The centre was inaugurated by Minister of State for Islamic Affairs Abdulla Saudhan during a ceremony attended by members of the Fuvahmulah City Council, senior officials from local institutions and residents. The facility includes five classrooms, a prayer room, a Quran memorisation assessment room, an auditorium, a library, office space and a meeting room.

In a post on X, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said the ministry will increase both Quran memorisation classes and the number of teachers in Fuvahmulah following the opening of the centre.

The design concept of the proposed Islamic Centre for the city has been shared with the Fuvahmulah City Council for comments. Once completed, the Islamic Centre will serve as a centre for Quranic studies, while the existing Quran Centre will be converted into a Waqf building, with rental income used to support religious activities in the city.

Developed at a cost of MVR 12 million, the outreach centre features five classrooms, a prayer area accommodating up to 30 people, a Quran memorisation assessment room, an auditorium, a library and administrative facilities. The Government has also announced plans to establish centres of the National Centre for the Holy Quran in every inhabited island in efforts to strengthen Quranic education and expand Waqf projects across the country.
