The Government plans to begin construction of a new drug rehabilitation centre in Kaafu Himmafushi next month, with the facility expected to accommodate up to 500 people at a time, Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan has announced.

Speaking at a ceremony to present certificates to participants who completed rehabilitation treatment through the Drug Court programme, the minister said the project is part of efforts to strengthen the country's drug rehabilitation system. He added that the new centre is expected to be completed within 18 months and built to international standards.

Minister Ihusaan said the Government has identified shortcomings in the existing treatment system and is working to improve rehabilitation services through new policies and upgraded facilities. In addition to the Himmafushi project, work is underway to modernise the National Drug Agency's treatment facilities and the halfway house in Hulhumalé to better support recovery and rehabilitation.

The minister further stressed the need to strengthen support services within the treatment system, particularly in areas such as psychosocial care and recovery support, to help individuals successfully reintegrate into society after treatment.

Drug abuse remains one of the Maldives' most significant social challenges. The Government has previously pledged to strengthen rehabilitation services and expand treatment facilities as part of its efforts to address the issue.
