The People's National Congress (PNC) has recorded an 85 per cent voter turnout in its nationwide constituency and steering committee elections, with party leaders describing the vote as the largest internal election ever held by a political party in the Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference after polling concluded, PNC Chairman and Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla said around 2,400 candidates contested positions across 119 island constituencies, while about 40,000 members were eligible to vote.

Speaker Abdul Raheem said between 32,000 and 33,000 members had cast their ballots by the time polling stations closed, representing around 85 per cent of eligible voters. He said the turnout, together with the large number of candidates contesting the election, reflected members' confidence in the party, the Government and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

He also said candidates, their representatives and supporters had prioritised safeguarding the party's interests while ensuring the election was conducted peacefully. The Speaker added that the absence of any major incidents during polling demonstrated the PNC's ability to conduct a large-scale internal election in an orderly manner.
