The Maldives National University (MNU) has introduced six new postgraduate programmes, including three PhD programmes and three master's programmes, with the first intake scheduled for February 2027.

The new programmes are the Doctor of Philosophy in Maldivian Culture and History, Doctor of Philosophy in Social Science, Doctor of Philosophy in Law, Master of Research in Engineering Science, Master of Science in Computer Science, and Master of Arts in Human Resources Management. The addition increases the total number of PhD programmes offered by the university from 18 to 21.

Speaking at a press conference, Vice Chancellor Dr Aishath Shehenaz Adam said offering the programmes in the Maldives would enable more students to pursue postgraduate studies without leaving the country. She also acknowledged the contributions of MNU's faculties, academic staff, foreign experts, the Government and the Maldives Qualifications Authority in developing the programmes.

The university said the new programmes have been developed to address growing demand for advanced qualifications across several fields. The doctoral programmes in Maldivian Culture and History, Social Science and Law are intended to strengthen research in the humanities, social sciences and legal studies, while the engineering, computer science and human resources programmes focus on developing specialised professional and research expertise.

Registrar Mohamed Laamir said the programmes will begin with the February 2027 intake. He outlined the general admission requirements and eligibility criteria, adding that prospective students should follow MNU's official communication channels for further information on admissions and programme commencement.
