President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to establish a public works site in each atoll of the Maldives to improve infrastructure maintenance across the country.

Speaking to residents of Maakurathu during his visit to Raa Atoll, the President revealed that these sites would be equipped with the necessary machinery to support their operations. He also disclosed plans to deploy two mobile units in the northern and southern regions to provide additional support.

The President emphasised that the construction of public works sites is a long-term investment that will yield significant benefits by reducing future maintenance costs for infrastructure on individual islands. He assured residents that this initiative was not a wasteful expenditure but a necessary step to enhance efficiency and sustainability in infrastructure management.

In addition to the public works initiative, President Dr Muizzu outlined several development projects for Maakurathu. He announced that work to address the island’s harbour and erosion issues will commence within the year. Furthermore, he pledged to enhance facilities at the local health centre and school.

The President also shared plans to begin constructing a futsal stadium on the island later this year and a housing development project in 2026.
