Sea-to-air cargo services in the Maldives are now connected to 23 international destinations through 17 global airline partners, according to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

The service, a joint initiative between MACL and Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), aims to ensure the secure and efficient air transport of goods arriving by sea via MPL. It marks a major step forward in logistics, introducing a new cargo handling method under the current administration.

Officially launched on May 15, 2024, the initiative saw Turkish Airlines become the first international carrier to integrate with the system. Within just one year, the project has shown encouraging results, according to government statements.

Since its inception, the operation has handled more than 2 million kilograms of cargo and contributed millions of dollars to the national economy.

The sea-to-air cargo model is widely adopted globally, offering substantial economic benefits and strengthening international trade connectivity.
