President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the National Service Programme will be launched in April 2025 to address key social and security challenges in the Maldives.

Delivering his Presidential Address for this year, he stated that legal, administrative, and resource preparations are underway to implement the initiative, which aims to develop responsible and resilient citizens capable of serving the nation in times of crisis and disaster.

The programme, first announced during Victory Day celebrations last year, is designed to provide Maldivian youth with opportunities for personal and professional growth, steering them away from unproductive and criminal environments. The President highlighted concerns over young people lacking direction and emphasised that the initiative would help address these issues.

Participants will receive training in essential life skills, discipline, and moral values, fostering respect, patience, and responsibility. The programme is expected to shape young people into productive members of society who contribute positively to their families and the nation.

Maldivians over 16 who cannot continue their studies or find employment will be recruited into the National Service Programme, joining the MNDF or Police. The President highlighted last year that 500 to 1,000 O-level graduates remain unemployed yearly, contributing to rising drug addiction and economic strain.
