President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of the tertiary hospital in Villimalé will begin this year, funded by the Chinese government.
In his Presidential Address for the year, he highlighted key plans to improve the health sector, ensuring better access to medical care for Maldivians.
The President also emphasised mental health as a priority. In this regard, the President noted that a mental health hospital will be built in Laamu Gan with financial support from India, and preparations are underway to construct new hospitals in Gadhdhoo and Thaa Villufushi this year. He added that the 1677 national mental health helpline, launched in March 2024, has already assisted 2,461 people.
To expand healthcare services, a new 75-bed ward at IGMH will be completed by April and begin operations in May.
Focusing on thalassaemia treatment, the President stated that medications and medical supplies for thalassemia patients are now available nationwide. The Government has also arranged for at least 10 children to undergo free bone marrow transplants annually, with 14 children sent abroad last year. The Thalassaemia Prevention, Control, and Management Master Plan, launched in 2024, is already in progress. Moreover, a state-of-the-art Thalassemia Hospital with accommodation facilities will be constructed in Hulhumalé this year, the President stated in his Address.
Additionally, minimally invasive gynaecologic surgeries have been introduced in Malé City hospitals, using advanced techniques similar to those in leading healthcare systems worldwide.
