President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has vowed to tackle the issue of youth idleness and crime, stating that the Government is committed to ensuring that young people are not left without opportunities or a purpose in life.
In his Presidential Address at the opening session of the People’s Majlis for 2025, President Dr Muizzu emphasised the importance of empowering youth and harnessing their potential for national development.
The President emphasised that young people are the backbone of any nation and stressed the Government’s responsibility to provide them with skills, training, and employment opportunities.
As part of these efforts, the President pointed to key initiatives aimed at equipping youth with employable skills. One such initiative is the National Apprenticeship Programme, designed to provide vocational training and promote self-sufficiency among young people. He noted that 393 youths have already completed training under the programme, while 114 are currently undergoing training, preparing them for employment.
Expanding on the Government’s youth-focused efforts, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the Community Upskilling Programme, which aims to enhance employability and practical skills among young people. Conducted across 21 islands, the programme has so far trained 166 youths, with another 264 currently enrolled. He reiterated that such initiatives are crucial in fostering a generation of self-reliant individuals who can actively contribute to the nation’s economy.
The President also announced that preparations are underway for the launch of the National Service in April. Initially introduced on Victory Day 2024, the programme aims to instil a sense of nationalism, knowledge, and pride among young people while addressing social and security concerns. President Dr Muizzu noted that administrative, financial, and legal frameworks for the system are nearing completion.
According to the President, the National Service System will help develop a generation of disciplined and responsible individuals ready to contribute to the nation’s progress. He reiterated that the initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to youth empowerment, ensuring they are not left vulnerable to crime and idleness but are instead nurtured into valuable members of society.
