First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed has called for increased efforts to enhance public awareness and understanding of autism, stressing the importance of correcting widespread misconceptions.
She delivered these remarks during the 15th Anniversary celebration of the Maldives Autism Association on February 6.
Addressing attendees at the event held in Hulhumalé, the First Lady pointed out that misunderstandings about autism persist within the community. She noted that many still view the condition as something requiring a cure or believe that individuals with autism must modify their behaviour to fit societal norms. She underscored the need to challenge these perceptions and promote a more accurate understanding of autism.
She further emphasised that children should be embraced as they are, with full acceptance of their individuality. Acknowledging the efforts of the Maldives Autism Association, she commended the organisation’s role in fostering inclusivity and providing essential support to individuals with autism, enabling them to advocate for their rights and contribute to society.
The First Lady also drew attention to the global landscape of autism, noting that despite the challenges it presents, many individuals have achieved remarkable success in various fields. She encouraged parents and caregivers to focus on nurturing the strengths of children with autism rather than being discouraged by the difficulties they may face.
In her speech, she reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting individuals with autism as part of its broader social justice initiatives. She highlighted plans aimed at increasing employment opportunities for people with autism, ensuring they have access to meaningful career prospects.
During the ceremony, the First Lady also recognised long-serving employees of the Maldives Autism Association, presenting them with commemorative plaques in appreciation of their dedication and contributions to the cause.
