President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has set a target for one-third of the workforce to be employed remotely by 2028.

He made the statement in his remarks at the inaugural session of the 'Maldives 2.0 Digital Transformation Summit' on Friday night.

Addressing the function, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the Administration’s commitment to achieving holistic, meaningful, and sustainable development, revealing the plans to digitalise the workforce to have one-third of employees working remotely by 2028.

He further touched on the importance of combating corruption and defined the eradication of corruption as one of the primary objectives of digitalisation.

The President expressed gratitude to the government of Estonia, recognised for its successful digital transformation, for supporting the Maldives’ efforts towards a similar future.

He stressed that digitalisation could combat corruption by improving transparency. He also highlighted efforts to create a unified, interoperable ID system that would allow citizens seamless access to public and private services, supported by a fortified national cybersecurity framework.

Attributing Estonia’s climb to the second place on the 2025 World Press Freedom Index to the success of its digital transformation, the President expressed hope that the Maldivian experience would allow similar accomplishments through responsible and speedy information dissemination.

In conclusion, President Dr Muizzu called for widespread support and cooperation in the Government's fight against corruption, urging the public to embrace the ongoing efforts towards digital transformation. He assured the relevant legal framework is under construction and fuelled by lessons from the Estonian experience, Maldives 2.0 will be designed to best suit the Maldivian context.

An initiative by the President, Maldives 2.0, charts a reformative digital transformation whereby all state institutions work in tandem towards providing prompt, safe, and transparent services to the public. This project, which would be implemented in the next three years, would see revolutionary changes, placing digital transformation at the core of governance and service delivery.

The Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, Chief Justice, members of the cabinet, senior State officials, and expert representatives from the Estonian government attended the inaugural session.
