President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Maldives cannot overcome the challenges facing its communities and the nation unless every individual upholds honesty and accountability.

Speaking during a community consultation with residents of Maafannu, the President addressed public concerns on a range of issues, including the drug crisis and illegal business operations by expatriates. He highlighted the Government’s ongoing work to tackle these problems within the law, noting recent legislative changes such as the introduction of capital punishment for major drug traffickers and new policies on deporting expatriates operating businesses unlawfully.

President Dr Muizzu said that issues such as illegal businesses and the limited job opportunities for Maldivian youth can only be solved if society acknowledges its role in enabling these challenges. He stressed that genuine progress requires sincerity, responsibility, and a willingness to confront difficult truths. He further noted that employment opportunities for youth must be expanded through greater involvement of the private sector, not just the Government.

Addressing Maafannu’s status as the most densely populated ward in Malé City, the President stated that housing remains one of the most pressing local concerns. He outlined ongoing national housing initiatives, including options for residents who were previously allocated one-bedroom apartments but are now seeking better alternatives.

He reaffirmed that the Government will remain transparent and accountable in its efforts to deliver development and ensure no individual is left behind. The President also highlighted major infrastructure works planned for Malé City and emphasised the significance of the Maldives 2.0 digital transformation initiative in reducing corruption and strengthening governance.

President Dr Muizzu reiterated the Administration’s commitment to addressing community concerns, adding that national progress ultimately relies on the collective honesty, accountability, and active engagement of the Maldivian people.
