President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has declared that no one is above the law, as he ratified the Prevention of Gang and Other Serious Offences Act today.

Emphasising the need for strong political will to tackle organised crime, the President assured firm and impartial action.

Speaking at the ratification ceremony held at the President’s Office, President Dr Muizzu affirmed that his Administration would act decisively without offering exemptions to any party.

Responding to questions from journalists, the President stated that gang-related crime has long plagued the Maldives due to a lack of political resolve and the prioritisation of personal interests over public safety.

The new Act, which came into force immediately upon publication in the Government Gazette, provides a legal framework for identifying and prosecuting gang-related crimes. It introduces systems to block criminal financing, confers powers to confiscate assets, and offers safeguards against the recruitment of minors into criminal organisations.

Key provisions include enhanced enforcement measures, judicial designation of gang entities, mechanisms for monitoring offenders, and a clear focus on preventing gang financing. President Dr Muizzu stressed that the Act is intended to protect communities from criminal influence – not to criminalise the public.

He underscored the importance of public cooperation in the successful implementation of the legislation and expressed confidence that the law would deliver positive results with sustained community support.

The President also noted that his Administration would strengthen the capacity of enforcement agencies and introduce practical, long-term solutions to address the deep-rooted issue of gang violence.
