President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described the inauguration of the Makkah Route Initiative in the Maldives as a moment of immense joy for Maldivians, highlighting the initiative as a major step forward in easing the journey for Hajj pilgrims.
Speaking at the official launch ceremony, the President expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, for including the Maldives in the initiative. He noted that the inclusion reflects the deep-rooted and close ties between the Maldives and Saudi Arabia, and said it brings great happiness to the Maldivian people.
Describing the arrangements as exemplary, the President extended his appreciation to the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, the Ministry of Interior, the officials of the Makkah Route Initiative, and the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in the Maldives for their efforts in implementing the initiative.
The President also acknowledged Saudi Arabia's broader efforts to enhance the quality of services provided to pilgrims, describing these efforts as a service to the entire Islamic Ummah.
Under the Makkah Route Initiative, Maldivian pilgrims can now complete immigration, customs, and health procedures at Velana International Airport before departing for Saudi Arabia, streamlining their arrival process. A dedicated Hajj clinic is also being established in Saudi Arabia, equipped with emergency services and operated in coordination with Saudi medical teams. Additionally, the Bank of Maldives has increased the international debit card limit to USD 1,750 to ease financial concerns during the pilgrimage.
