Sulaiman bin Abdul Azeez Al Yahya, Advisor to His Royal Highness the Minister of Interior of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Makkah Route Initiative, paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Monday at Velana International Airport.
During the meeting, President Dr Muizzu expressed his deep gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and the Government of Saudi Arabia for selecting the Maldives as one of the participating countries in the Makkah Route Initiative. He stated that the decision reflects the close and longstanding bond between the two nations and the high regard Saudi Arabia places on its relationship with the Maldives.
Sulaiman bin Abdul Azeez Al Yahya noted that the decision to implement the initiative in the Maldives came under the direct instructions of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with a clear directive to ensure its execution this year without delay. He praised the Maldives for its disciplined organisation and consistent performance in managing Hajj operations, saying the country had shown it is well deserving of this facilitation.
With the Maldives now part of the Makkah Route Initiative, pilgrims will complete visa, immigration, and health procedures at Velana International Airport before departure, allowing for direct hotel transfers and separate baggage delivery upon arrival in Mecca.
The Maldives now joins a select group of countries benefiting from the initiative, including Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Morocco.
