A new Multi-Speciality Surgical Wing has been commissioned at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), adding 75 beds to the national referral hospital and bringing its total bed capacity to 510.
Inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the newly established facility will provide surgical care in general, neuro, plastic, orthopaedic, and urological specialities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, stated that 194 beds have been added to IGMH over the past one and a half years. He also noted that the Administration has prioritised healthcare workforce expansion, with approval granted to recruit 411 additional personnel.
The inauguration of the surgical wing coincided with the opening of a newly expanded emergency room at Hulhumalé Hospital. Both developments are part of a broader national strategy to enhance healthcare services across Greater Malé and the atolls.
Major infrastructure upgrades are also underway at Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, Lhaviyani Naifaru Hospital, and Dr Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo, all of which are being developed into tertiary-level healthcare facilities to enhance regional access to specialised services.
