Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that a range of initiatives are being planned in support of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s declaration of 2026 as the 'Year of National Innovation'.

Speaking to MMTV at the ongoing Maldives Expo 2025, the Minister said the President has directed the Ministry to formulate a concept and prepare a policy paper to guide the implementation of the initiative.

Describing the ongoing Expo as a key platform for showcasing businesses in the creative economy, the Minister noted that it plays an important role in advancing the Government’s goal of increasing the sector’s contribution to 15 per cent of GDP by 2030.

The Minister added that the event offers valuable insights into how the Government can support growth in the sector, including the type of assistance required, who should benefit, and how public investment can be channelled effectively to meet the national target.

He also highlighted President Dr Muizzu’s strong personal engagement with the Expo, noting that the President spent more than six and a half hours across two nights visiting nearly all the exhibitors.

According to the Minister, discussions on entrepreneurship and private sector development have become more active under the current Administration, particularly through the Business Council, which includes representatives from the creative industries and small businesses.
