MTCC signs contracts for development projects on three islands

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC) has officially entered into agreements to carry out development initiatives on three islands: Alif Dhaal Hangnaameedhoo, Laamu Maavah, and Baa Eydhafushi.

These projects include coastal protection works in Hangnaameedhoo and Maavah, as well as the creation of a designated swimming area in Eydhafushi.

The agreements were signed by MTCC’s Managing Director, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retd) Ahmed Saudhee. State Minister Ibrahim Nazim, representing the Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, signed the coastal protection contracts, while the President of the Eydhafushi Council, Mohamed Faathih, signed the agreement concerning the swimming area development.

Alif Dhaal Hangnaameedhoo

Serving a population of approximately 760 residents, the Hangnaameedhoo project is designed to address ongoing coastal erosion. The scope of work includes:

  • Placement of 14,322.75 cubic metres each of coarse sand and grain sand along the beachfront.
  • Construction of a 455-metre outer breakwater.
  • Installation of 440 metres of rock groynes.

The total contract value is MVR 46.20 million, and the project is scheduled for completion within 240 days.

Laamu Maavah

Home to around 2,200 residents, Maavah faces persistent challenges related to shoreline erosion and flooding. To address these concerns, the project will involve:

  • Placement of 166,400 cubic metres of coarse sand and 55,500 cubic metres of grain sand.
  • Dredging of 7,500 cubic metres to deepen the swimming area.
  • Construction of 524 metres of rock revetment and 2,024 metres of geobag revetment.
  • Installation of 180 metres of rock groyne and 260 metres of geobag groyne.

This project is expected to be completed within 540 days and is valued at MVR 89.13 million.

Baa Eydhafushi

In Eydhafushi, with a population exceeding 3,500, MTCC will undertake the development of a dedicated swimming area. The project comprises:

  • Dredging of 15,914 cubic metres.
  • Construction of 160 metres of geobag revetment, 70 metres of groyne, and 60 metres of outer wall.

The Eydhafushi project carries a value of MVR 4.63 million and is anticipated to be completed within 150 days.
