A Japanese company has signed an agreement to fully convert the water services of Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi City to renewable energy, marking a significant step toward sustainable infrastructure in the Maldives.
The agreement was formalised on Sunday during a ceremony held at Meerumaa Maalam in Malé. Japan’s Kanadevia Corporation was awarded the project by the Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC).
Under the agreement, 100 per cent of the energy required for Kulhudhuffushi’s water production system will be generated through solar power.
MWSC Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed signed on behalf of the company, while Kanadevia Corporation was represented by General Manager Takeshi Aiba. The ceremony was attended by Japan’s Ambassador to the Maldives, Ishigami Rumiko; MWSC Chairperson Shamhooza Ahmed; board directors and senior officials from both companies; and representatives from various Government agencies.
The project highlights include:
MWSC stated that the project aligns with national energy policies, climate change adaptation efforts, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It is also expected to reduce dependency on fossil fuel imports and support environmentally responsible utility operations.
Once completed, the project will make Kulhudhuffushi’s water production system entirely solar-powered, benefiting the community through both environmental sustainability and economic efficiency.
According to MWSC, the project is expected to save 200,000 litres of diesel annually and prevent the emission of approximately 573 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.
