The nominations for two vacant seats on the Supreme Court have been formally submitted to the Judiciary Committee of Parliament for review.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has recommended High Court Justice Mohamed Saleem and former Justice Abdulla Hameed for appointment to the bench.

According to the Commission, both candidates achieved the highest scores in the interview process, which was conducted after a total of twelve applicants submitted their candidacies before the official deadline.

The nominations were announced during today’s parliamentary session, after which the President forwarded the matter to the Judiciary Committee in accordance with the standard procedure.

The Supreme Court comprises the Chief Justice and six other justices. In line with the Judiciary Act, justices of the Supreme Court are appointed by the President following consultations with the JSC. These appointments must then be submitted to Parliament for approval and require endorsement by a majority of members present and voting.

The current vacancies on the bench arose following the dismissal of Justices Mahaz Ali Zahir and Dr Azmiralda Zahir.
