Parliament refers non-resident ambassador appointments to committee

During today’s parliamentary session, the Secretary General announced the names of the three individuals nominated by the President for the posts of non-resident ambassadors.

Following the announcement, the matter has been referred to the Foreign Relations Committee of the Parliament in accordance with parliamentary procedure.

The nominees are as follows:

  • Aishath Azima – Nominated as Non-Resident Ambassador to Nepal
  • Iruthisham Adam – Nominated as Non-Resident Ambassador to the United Kingdom
  • Geela Ali – Nominated as Non-Resident Ambassador to Ukraine

Aishath Azima is a veteran of the Foreign Ministry. She has served as Ambassador to China and as Additional Secretary at the Ministry.

Iruthisham Adam is a seasoned diplomat. She was Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva under President Mohamed Nasheed and served as Ambassador to Switzerland and Representative to the WTO. Domestically, she was Minister of Youth and Sports under President Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Meanwhile, Geela Ali has over 30 years of experience in Maldives’ health and foreign affairs sectors. Her diplomatic roles include Minister and Chargé d’Affaires at the Permanent Mission in Geneva and Minister Counsellor at the Embassy in the UK. In 2018, she was appointed Additional Secretary and Head of Consular Services at the Foreign Ministry.
