Some customers have reported an increase in their electricity bills for May compared to those of April, despite the implementation of a recently announced reduction in electricity tariffs.
The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) addressed these concerns in a statement issued via X, offering clarification on the matter.
According to Stelco, while the revised tariff came into effect on May 1, electricity bills for April had benefitted from additional discounts, particularly those extended during the month of Ramadan. Consequently, certain customers may find their May bills higher than their April bills, notwithstanding the introduction of the reduced rate.
The company emphasised that a more accurate assessment of the impact of the new tariff will be possible when comparing the current billing cycle to previous periods unaffected by temporary reductions or abbreviated billing durations. Stelco specifically recommended comparing May 2025 bills with those issued in December 2024 or January 2025 to discern the actual difference resulting from the tariff adjustment.
The tariff revision was announced by President Dr Mohammed Muizzu, who confirmed that domestic electricity rates would be lowered from the beginning of June
The scale of the reductions was outlined, and the relevant authorities were instructed to implement the changes in a manner that upholds both sustainability and transparency.
This policy move aligns with one of President Dr Muizzu’s key electoral commitments - addressing widespread public concerns regarding the high cost of electricity.
