The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a travel advisory urging Maldivians to exercise caution due to a spike in chikungunya cases reported in neighbouring countries.
In a public alert posted on X, the agency warned that the mosquito-borne illness is spreading in nearby regions, though it did not specify the countries by name. However, media outlets in India and Sri Lanka have reported significant increases in chikungunya infections in recent weeks.
The HPA advised all travellers to take preventive measures to reduce the risk of infection, particularly when visiting countries experiencing active transmission. Recommended precautions include using mosquito repellents, wearing clothing that covers the body, sleeping under mosquito nets, and keeping doors and windows secured with mesh screens to prevent mosquito entry, especially during peak hours around dawn and dusk.
Chikungunya is transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Once infected, individuals typically experience symptoms such as high fever, joint swelling, and prolonged fatigue. In some cases, joint pain and swelling can persist for months.
The HPA continues to monitor regional disease trends closely and has urged the public to remain vigilant, especially with increased travel during the season.
