The Road Development Corporation (RDC) has issued an update on the ongoing work to upgrade road infrastructure on the islands of Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo and Lhaviyani Hinnavaru, as part of the Government’s broader efforts to modernise transport networks across the country.

In Kudahuvadhoo, RDC reports that current works include wall construction, compacting, and levelling on Orchid Road. The project aims to pave 5.85 kilometres of roads with tarmac, in addition to establishing a comprehensive drainage system, installing street lighting, and placing road signage.

RDC was contracted to carry out the Kudahuvadhoo project in September 2021. The project is being funded through the state budget at a cost exceeding MVR 122 million.

Meanwhile, progress continues on the Hinnavaru road development initiative. According to RDC, kerb stones are currently being laid on Road 13, while wall construction is ongoing along Nooraanee Magu.

The Hinnavaru project will see 7.1 kilometres of road developed using a design-and-build approach. Like Kudahuvadhoo, the work includes drainage installation, street lighting, and road signage. This project, also awarded to RDC in 2021, is being implemented with an allocation of MVR 122 million from the Government budget.

Both islands were among several where road development projects had stalled during the previous administration, primarily due to logistical and administrative delays.

Upgrading roads on inhabited islands remains a key pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has committed to completing main roads on every island during his term. A central focus of the Administration is to resume and expedite development projects that were previously halted.
