Minister of Dhivehi, Language, Culture and Heritage Adam Naseer has confirmed that the Government is preparing to formally launch an initiative aimed at documenting the life stories and memories of senior citizens, as part of efforts to preserve the Maldives’ cultural and historical heritage.

Speaking to state media, Minister Adam Naseer explained that the project will involve collecting oral histories from elders, alongside gathering relevant materials, translations, and resources. He noted that recording the memories of elderly citizens allows for documenting key periods of Maldivian history using scientific methods. By selecting a sample of around ten individuals in their 50s and 60s from each island, the Government hopes to construct a broader narrative of the country’s past.

The Minister added that once the documentation is complete, it will help identify the cultural values, traditions, and principles of Maldivian ancestors, which will be valuable for future generations.

He also revealed that efforts are underway to establish a uniform framework for the initiative. The Government plans to identify national assets, heritage sites, and resources by consolidating official records both within the Maldives and abroad.

Describing the project as a significant task, the Minister emphasised its importance in recognising and preserving the unique skills, characteristics, and creativity of the Maldivian people.
