Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has called for stronger measures to protect endangered shark and ray species.

The Minister made the call while speaking at a side event held to launch the Global Coalition to Halt the Extinction of Threatened Sharks and Rays.

In his remarks, Minister Thoriq underscored the vital role that sharks and rays play in maintaining marine biodiversity, highlighting the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to protect these species, including a nationwide ban on their capture and initiatives aimed at preserving their natural habitats.

Minister Thoriq stated that protecting sharks and rays is crucial for maintaining the stability and balance of marine ecosystems.

The Maldives is actively participating in the newly launched Global Coalition to Halt the Extinction of Threatened Sharks and Rays, an initiative that brings together governments, NGOs, and other partners to safeguard these vulnerable species from extinction.
