This morning, a Maldivian domestic flight en route from Kulhudhuffushi to Male was forced to return to Velana International Airport after encountering severe weather conditions.
According to a statement released by Aviators Maldives on social media, Maldivian flight Q2442 departed from Kulhudhuffushi at 8:34 am and was scheduled to land in Male at 9:20 am. However, unfavourable weather and strong winds prevented the aircraft from safely landing as planned.
After remaining airborne for an extended period while assessing the conditions, the flight was ultimately diverted back to Velana International Airport, where it landed safely. Fortunately, no damage was reported to the aircraft, and all passengers and crew members disembarked without incident.
The incident coincides with deteriorating weather conditions currently affecting the northern regions of the Maldives. The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a white alert for several northern atolls, including Haa Alif Atoll through to Lhaviyani Atoll. The alert, which remains in effect from 11:45 am to 4:00 pm today, warns of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds.
According to the Met Office, wind speeds are expected to range between 19 and 24 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph within cloud formations. Additionally, rough sea conditions have been forecasted, posing further challenges to both maritime and air travel in the affected areas.
