The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has announced it will not proceed with major lawsuits, including terrorism charges, against two prominent scholars, Sheikh Fazloon Mohamed and Sheikh Adam Nishan.

The cases stemmed from disturbances during a yoga event in 2020, under the previous government's administration.

The PGO confirmed today that it received requests to review the charges, which were initially filed in connection with protests in areas including Galolhu Football Stadium, opposing yoga day activities.

Sheikh Fazloon and Sheikh Nishan had previously asserted that the lawsuits, which carried potential prison sentences of 10 and 15 years, were politically motivated and lacked evidence.

Following its review, the PGO decided to drop charges against individuals not directly involved in attacking participants or inciting fear. This includes charges filed under anti-terrorism laws, laws prohibiting intimidation and dangerous weapons, and laws concerning the possession of sharp objects.

The PGO cited several factors influencing its decision, including the emotional context of the disturbances, the significant time elapsed without court proceedings, the defendants' lack of prior criminal records, and their roles within society.

As a result, the case will now only proceed with charges of intentionally obstructing law enforcement officers against those with clear evidence of direct involvement in assaulting yoga participants and creating fear.
