Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) CEO and Managing Director, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Retd.) Ahmed Saudi, has announced that the launch of the Government’s taxi line has been delayed until August.

Saudi made the announcement in response to a shareholder’s question during the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held yesterday at Barceló Nasandhura.

The project was officially awarded to MTCC by the Government on February 12, 2025, as part of efforts to enhance the quality of taxi services in the Greater Malé region.

Although the service was initially scheduled to launch in July, Saudi clarified that it is now expected to roll out in August, as development of the vehicles required for the service only commenced this month.

He stated that MTCC has signed a contract with a company to develop electric vehicles (EVs) for the service, and noted that if EVs become more widespread in the Maldives, they will be made available for public purchase through MTCC’s trading division.

The Government intends to operate the taxi line using 100 percent environmentally friendly vehicles, which will come in three different sizes. The service will be available 24 hours a day. To ensure consistent service quality, drivers will be employed as both full-time permanent staff and part-time workers.
